Breaking! Micron’s Taoyuan plant announces a 24-hour strike

October 22 — According to reports cited by FlashData Market, labor-management negotiations at Micron in Taiwan have diverged. The Taichung-based labor union reached an agreement with the company yesterday and withdrew its request for mediation; meanwhile, the Taoyuan-based union, having received no concrete response regarding a profit-sharing proposal, launched a 24-hour strike at 9:00 a.m. today.

In contrast to the successful agreement reached with the Taichung union, negotiations between the Taoyuan union and the company remain at a standstill. The union stated that since the first mediation session in September, the company has failed to put forward any concrete figures regarding a profit-sharing scheme. As yesterday's discussions also yielded no substantive progress, the union has decided to continue its strike action.

Reported by Cailian Press

According to a report by Cailian Press, Micron Technology employs approximately 15,000 people in Taiwan, with the workforces at its Taoyuan and Taichung facilities represented by separate labor unions. Micron has previously stated that it has invested over NT$1.6 trillion (approximately RMB 330 billion) in Taiwan.

This strike heightens operational risks at one of Micron's most critical manufacturing hubs; the company's two Taiwan-based facilities primarily produce DRAM and HBM chips—key components for AI servers. According to the Taichung labor union, the combined output from the Taoyuan and Taichung plants accounts for more than 60% of Micron's total production.

Micron has also disclosed that its advanced packaging and testing facility in Taichung has officially commenced production, with its capacity for 2027 already fully booked. This facility serves as Micron's second advanced packaging and testing center in Taiwan, with a core objective of increasing back-end production capacity for HBM.

Furthermore, Micron is expanding its operations across four locations in Taiwan: Taoyuan, Tongluo, Taichung, and Tainan. Among these, the Taichung plant stands as Micron's largest production base in Taiwan and serves as a vital hub for HBM back-end processes.

The Taoyuan Fab 11E facility is scheduled to begin production in 2028 and will utilize advanced extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. Designed as a next-generation DRAM production site equipped with EUV technology, the facility's architecture also includes provisions for the future installation of high-numerical-aperture (high-NA) EUV equipment. The first phase of the Tongluo facility is slated to begin production in the second half of 2027.
