The long-rumored Arm PC chip is about to be released

Almost a year after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang hinted that we should wait a year for updates on the company's AI PC ambitions, new reports suggest the company is preparing to unveil its long-rumored Arm consumer CPU at Computex 2025 later this month.

Nvidia and MediaTek are expected to launch more affordable versions of the AI PCs they showed off at CES last January, ComputerBase and Heise reported. The announcements could signal Microsoft's long-awaited Arm ambitions to go beyond Qualcomm Snapdragon chips.

By partnering with MediaTek, Nvidia hopes to make inroads into the market currently occupied by AMD APUs with high-performance Radeon graphics cards and Arm-based Snapdragon X processors. Nvidia's Blackwell discrete graphics cards are expected to offer higher performance and better game compatibility than AMD Radeon and Qualcomm Adreno, so it will undoubtedly attract the attention of gamers.

In a recent conference call, MediaTek confirmed that it will deliver a keynote at Computex 2025 on May 20 at 11 pm EST, exactly 24 hours after Nvidia's keynote at the same show. Media reports from Asia indicate that MediaTek has recently acquired a large amount of FCBGA packaging capacity, which suggests that the two companies are preparing to launch PCs with soldered processors.

Two devices are reportedly planned, dubbed N1 and N1X. The devices will be powered by Arm-based MediaTek CPUs and Nvidia GPUs, and will likely be more affordable, Windows-ready scaled-down versions of the GB10 Linux workstation released in January.

Early reports about N1X

According to early reports, the N1X and N1 processors are expected to feature up to 10 Cortex-X925 high-performance cores and up to 10 Cortex-A725 cores, but may be launched with less powerful CPU configurations to cater to markets currently underserved by Qualcomm and its Snapdragon X processors, as well as AMD's Ryzen APUs with built-in Radeon graphics processors.

This will boost Microsoft's efforts to launch Windows devices with Arm chips, a process it kicked off last year with a series of laptops powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X SoCs. Arm has previously confirmed that other vendors will eventually launch competing Arm chips for Windows PCs, too.

Arm instructions on Mac and other devices

On Macs and other devices, the Arm instruction set has demonstrated greater energy efficiency than x86. However, after decades as the PC standard, x86 has accumulated a large library of software that Arm developers must port or support through a compatibility layer.

Rumors about Nvidia's Arm AI PC plans began in late 2023. The following year, Nvidia and Dell executives advised the public to stay tuned for more information. Subsequent reports said Nvidia plans to release a consumer product in late 2025 and an enterprise version in March 2026.

At this year's CES, Nvidia and MediaTek jointly announced Project Digits, a $3,000 mini PC designed to test AI workloads without relying on cloud servers. The mini PC is equipped with a MediaTek 20-core GB10 CPU, 128GB RAM, 1 PetaFLOP Nvidia Blackwell GPU and a 4TB SSD, and has a volume of only 1.1 liters (150 x 150 x 50.5 mm).

The consumer version of this product may be equipped with 8 to 16 cores and 16 to 32GB of RAM, but the price remains to be seen. Nvidia, MediaTek and other companies joining the Arm Windows camp may aim to launch a Windows product comparable to Apple's acclaimed M4 Mac Mini.

Despite the high attention of MediaTek and Nvidia's processors, the actual release date remains uncertain. According to multiple sources, development problems may significantly delay the commercial release of systems based on the new processors. Some predictions believe that these delays may push the release date to 2026, but these rumors have not been confirmed at this time.
