General-purpose oscilloscopes enter the era of 14-bit ADCs to meet new challenges in electronic design

With the continuous advancement of technologies such as 5G, IoT, cloud computing, and AI, the ICT industry is ushering in unprecedented development opportunities.

Against this backdrop, the importance of digital oscilloscopes is becoming increasingly prominent. As a key test instrument for observing, analyzing, or recording the behavior of electrical signals, it plays a vital role in research and development, verification, quality assurance, and troubleshooting and debugging. However, as designs become more complex and signals become smaller, testing becomes increasingly difficult, thus placing higher demands on the next generation of digital oscilloscopes.

Keysight Technologies recently launched the InfiniiVision HD3 series of 14-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) oscilloscopes, boasting more than four times the signal resolution of other general-purpose oscilloscopes and less than half the noise floor. The InfiniiVision HD3 series features a redesigned architecture with custom application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and deep memory, enabling engineers to quickly detect and debug signal problems in a variety of applications.

Mr. Zhu Huapeng, Business Development Manager for Digital and Optical Products, Asia Pacific, explained that the design of devices and components is becoming increasingly complex, and the signals used are becoming smaller and smaller. 

To ensure product quality and maximize yield, engineers must troubleshoot designs by simultaneously tracking multiple signals to identify the smallest signal errors that characterize design and hardware defects. Therefore, engineers need an oscilloscope that can eliminate the effects of noise and measure tiny and rare signal faults to correct product problems.

The new InfiniiVision HD3 series oscilloscopes from Dexterity offer digital designers and engineers high vertical resolution to meet this challenge, thanks to their advanced 14-bit ADC and extremely low noise floor of 50 µVRMS (allowing for the detection of minute signal anomalies).

The 14-bit ADC is a major highlight of the InfiniiVision HD3 series, offering four times the vertical accuracy compared to the mainstream 12-bit ADCs currently on the market. Simultaneously, it boasts a noise floor of less than 50 µV (compared to hundreds of microvolts in previous oscilloscopes), a maximum memory depth of 100 Mpts (25 times the memory capacity of the previous 3000G series), and a waveform update rate of up to 1.3 million times per second. These core characteristics enable fast and accurate debugging of all measurements.

Zhu Huapeng stated that the core of portable precision equipment lies in high precision, vertical resolution, and noise floor control. Compared to general-purpose chips, customized ASIC chips are better suited to the computational and data processing speeds required by oscilloscopes. The InfiniiVision HD3 series, employing a custom ASIC chip, enables faster waveform processing and display, meeting the demands of high-speed electronic testing.

The new ASIC chip integrates not only memory and data processing but also ADC and triggering technology, enhancing integration and providing engineers with high sampling rates and memory, lossless waveform update rates, high vertical resolution, and hardware-based functions such as masking, region, and serial decoding under typical test conditions, resulting in higher speed and waveform capture rates.
